Our Vaccine Philosophy
At Pediatric Associates of Barrington, we specialize in the primary care of children from infancy through young adulthood. The goal of primary medical care is to assist patients in achieving and maintaining their optimal health. We accomplish this through regularly scheduled physical exams at intervals established by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and through immunizations recommended by both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control.
Immunizations are the foundation of primary pediatric care. They protect patients against some of the most devastating diseases that children can acquire. Immunizations were, and continue to be, developed against diseases that may cause the greatest harm, even potentially death, to vulnerable populations.
In our society, breakthroughs in medical science have decreased the incidence of these diseases so dramatically that most parents have no knowledge of these illnesses. However, if immunization rates were to decrease, there would be a re-emergence of these diseases, leaving those not properly immunized vulnerable to illness. Unfortunately, these bacteria and viruses are always in our communities and can strike under-immunized children at any time.
Because of our dedication to preventative care, we advise all recommended immunizations be administered at the recommended ages. Research tells us how the immune system works and develops, and the vaccine schedule is reflective of that research. The greatest number of vaccines is administered to infants and toddlers in the first two years of life because they are the most vulnerable population. Additional vaccines and booster doses protect us against the illnesses we continue to be susceptible to throughout our lifespan.
If you are concerned or uncertain about immunizing your child, please let your provider know at the 2 week checkup so that he or she can answer your questions or refer you to reliable medical research regarding vaccines. If you do not wish to have your child receive recommended immunizations at the recommended ages, we will ask you to transfer your child/children's care to another provider who is amenable to your wishes.
Our goal is to always provide your child with the highest standard of pediatric care and immunizations help make that possible. We hope that we will be able to work as a team to accomplish that goal for many years to come.
We are happy to discuss your concerns about vaccines at your child's next visit.
